  • Emergency Preparedness for your Business in 2015
Natural disasters are all around us.  It is absolutely astonishing how the weather patterns are changing around us and the impact they are having with storms and even the likelihood of fires. With that said, if we bring up the topic of being “prepared” for such a disaster, many of us immediately think of our personal or family situation, but not the emergency preparedness for in regards to our business. We often forget that these same disasters affect business owners and can create even greater hurdles for families to get back on their feet. Personally, I am a Scoutmaster and not only try to teach my boys to live the Scout Moto: “Be Prepared”, but even I oftentimes forget the little things.  Just the other day we went on a campout and forgot a can opener, and after a less than robust dinner around the campfire, I went home and… ... • Be careful of an Audit if Bartering for Goods and Services or Using Bitcoin
You may have thought there wasn’t any harm in trading services or goods with another business owner for something of interest or to fulfill a need of yours. However, watch out for the tax man if under audit. Regrettably, it’s clear in the tax code that when a taxpayer receives goods or services in exchange for his services, the fair market value of the goods or services received is gross income. (IRS Reg Section 1.61-2(d)(1). The fair market value of the goods and services received in a barter transaction is the price normally charged by the transferring party. Thus, a CPA firm that accepted goods and services from clients in exchange for accounting services had to include the goods and services in income at the normal retail price—not at a discounted value based on the clients’ inability to pay cash. In fact, where the services are rendered at a stipulated… ... Read more
  • Can a Foreigner use an S-Corporation in the U.S.?
This is a common question we are asked on a regular basis and an important one. In fact, it tends be a common concern with Canadian clients doing real estate projects in the U.S. Here are some basics that can help you if you are a foreigner or investing with a foreign partner. Why an S-Corporation in the first place? It’s no secret that an S-Corp is a fantastic entity for U.S. real estate investors rehabbing, fix and flipping or wholesaling properties. Moreover, it’s perfect for consulting, selling a product or getting commissions. The S-Corp can be phenomenal to save on Self-employment tax. Thus, it’s no surprise that many foreigners will often hear or read about the benefits of an S-Corp and wonder if this is the right choice for them. Some Foreigners don’t need an S-Corporation? Understanding that S-Corps save on Self-Employment tax, it then begs the question: “Is… ... Read more
  • The Hidden Power and Benefits of a College Education IRA
Ok…so the real name of an IRA that can be used for education expenses is called a Coverdell Education Savings Account (Coverdell ESA).  However, for simplicity sake, we in the accounting world generally refer to these powerful little gems as the “Education IRA”. Regrettably, not everyone in the accounting world believes the Education IRA to be a precious gem.  Mostly because they don’t understand their hidden benefit and strategy.  Thus, in my opinion, the 529 college savings plans are oversold to the public and no one really talks about the Education IRA. Let me set the record straight and share what I think to be one of the most incredible ways to save for college education. First, the good news: Think of a Coverdell ESA as simply an IRA…any investments inside the IRA grow tax free and come out tax free for any qualified education expenses (typically tuition, books, fees,… ...
